Recalling the time his age group first started playing 11-a-side, Highdale says he was the only sub out of 12 players. He knew that being part of the academy set-up was no guarantee of success, though. His dad was a regular at Anfield and together they had always dreamed of him playing there one day. Liverpool had been a part of Highdale’s life for as long as he could remember. Not that I didn’t care, but I was too focused on, ‘When can I get back fit and when can I get back to footie?’.” “And I didn’t understand the extent of my injuries. Highdale says he did not know how devastating the crash had been. It was April 2008 and while everyone around Highdale - doctors, nurses, surgeons - focused on getting him healthy enough to live as full a life as possible, the 17-year-old saw only one end goal: getting back to playing football for Liverpool. “I went from being the happiest person alive to the next day being at the lowest point of life,” he says.
